They process 60,000 tons of garbage annually and serve more than 215,000 homes. The key to the long operational life of pneumatic systems lies in their proper operation and preventive maintenance.
Madrid, February 8, 2024.- Practically half of the pneumatic waste collection systems in Spain operated by Envac, specifically 18 of the 44 that it manages directly, have been in operation for more than 20 years and are doing so at full capacity. Together, the pneumatic collection systems process 60,000 tons of garbage annually and serve more than 215,000 homes, which is equivalent to a population close to one million people. This group of facilities includes the pioneers of pneumatic collection in Spain , who have already accumulated more than 30 years of uninterrupted activity or are approaching this age. These include the one built in 1991 in the Santa Ana Urbanization, in Cartagena, which was the first of all and currently continues to serve 3,000 homes, or the Olympic Village in Barcelona, which has been operating uninterruptedly since 1992. Together To them, others that also exceed 25 years of uninterrupted operation are those of Eix Maciá, in Sabadell, and the first that began operating in Majadahonda, in Madrid. All of them were built between 1990 and 1998. There are also around twenty facilities in operation in Sweden, Denmark, the United States and Saudi Arabia, which were built in the 60s and 70s of the last century, which means that they have been operating without interruption for more. 50 years old. This group includes the installation system on Roosevelt Island, in New York, which serves 14,000 citizens. Since its launch in 1975, it has never stopped operating, not even in 2010 during the strong snow storms that the city suffered and which altered the operation of public services for three weeks, including the transit of collection trucks. , nor during Hurricane Sandy (the deadliest tropical cyclone of the 2012 hurricane season), when the storm hit the Northeast, leaving piles of trash in areas that were flooded for days. “All of these facilities are an example of the longevity and reliability of this technology that continues to be, sixty years after its invention and entry into operation in Europe, at the forefront in waste management in cities,” explains Carlos Bernad, president of Envac Iberia and president of the EMEA region. “The key to the long operational life of pneumatic systems lies in their proper operation and preventive maintenance. This allows them to exploit their capabilities and guarantee their proper functioning, obtain effective performance and achieve greater cost efficiency per ton collected. Furthermore, this durability constitutes the guarantee that the systems will be able to continue evolving with the incorporation of new advances in aspects related to their control and user experience”, concludes Carlos Bernad. The regular surveys that Envac carries out to the users of the system, accredited by Demoscopic companies such as Sigma 2, highlight the very high rating it deserves. Over 80% declare their preference for it over the traditional one, based on containers placed on the streets and heavy trucks for transport. They highlight this technology. its less harmful nature for the environment, the lower CO₂ emission, the minimum degree of inconvenience it causes, the liberation of public spaces, the improvement of the urban environment and its comfort.
