Currently, statutory minimum wage is 8.84 euros per hour. This is too little, says Olaf Scholz, and calls on his party to be in favour of an increase. His proposal: “We should raise minimum wage to twelve euros per hour in a manageable period,” said Scholz to mirror. “In a society where wages are under pressure through globalization and technical change, SPD must use minimum wage much more as a correction tool than it has done so far.”

The minimum wage was introduced at urging of SPD by Great Coalition. At end of year, it increased from 8.50 euros to 8.84 euros gross per hour. The increase to twelve euros corresponds to demand of Left party. So far, SPD had not set a specific number, but called for furr improvements to minimum wage.
Scholz justified his demand among or things with retirement provision. The wage limit must be high enough in future to ensure that no one who works full-time is dependent on public aid in old age.
The SPD politician had recently presented a paper on realignment of SPD. Unlike SPD chief Martin Schulz, who had recently called for more courage to critique capitalism, Scholz had promoted it to a pragmatic course that connected economic growth, progress and social justice. In paper, Scholz had also asked for a “relentless consideration of situation” after severe SPD defeat, and urged that re should be “no excuses” more in cause research.
