While extreme snowboarders fly through the air off a giant ramp, bands, DJs and other performers will be jamming live from two stages as the third annual Air + Style festival returns to Expo Park.
Organized by two-time Olympic Gold Medalist Shaun White, the two-day festival returns on Feb. 18-19 with a roster of elite snowboarders competing on a massive 16-story, 450-foot-long ramp while 20 bands perform throughout the weekend.
“It’s amazing, man. I’m just so thankful to be doing it again,” White said during a phone interview. “This is truly a very unique experience because you get to see the world’s best professional snowboarders and your favorite groups.”
Those groups cover the musical gamut with hip-hop, rap, EDM rock and pop acts set to perform. Headliners for the eclectic lineup include Flume on Saturday and Major Lazer closing it all out Sunday.
“(The music) is geared toward everyone,” White said. “I wanted to make it a well-rounded festival so it attracts everyone.”
But while it’ll be easy to follow the snowboarding portion of the festival since all athletes use the same ramp, with 20 bands and two stages you’ll need a plan to catch the must-see acts. With that in mind, here are the top acts each day.
Saturday
The Shelters: Tom Petty thought this young band was so promising that he decided to co-produce their self-titled debut album. Their single, “Rebel Heart,” will remind you a bit of classic rock bands like The Byrds but with a more modern foot-tapping feel. Winter Stage, 4:30 p.m.
St. Lucia on the Summer Stage: Led by South African born musician Jean-Philip Grobler, this Brooklyn-based indie-pop group is on a fast rise. They have made the rounds at such festivals as Coachella, Lollapalooza and on TV shows such as “Jimmy Kimmel Live” and “Late Night With Seth Meyers,” so don’t miss out on seeing them up close now while you still can. Their latest album, “Matter,” was released in January and includes the catchy single “Dancing on Glass.” Winter Stage, 5:15 p.m.
Chromeo: If you want the funk, Chromeo will deliver. So bring your best moves and expect to get down with this Canadian duo who mix smart lyrics with electro-funk sounds that will likely turn the Winter Stage into an outdoor disco. Winter Stage, 8 p.m.
Vince Stapes: Long Beach native Vince Staples is a passionate performer and one of the smartest new voices in hip-hop. His double LP “Summertime ’06” on Def Jam is a coming-of-age story and an homage to the city where he grew up, so expect a lot of hometown pride when the rapper takes the stage. Summer Stage, 9 p.m.
Flume: As if this Australian producer’s music sets weren’t already epic enough, his Saturday performance may be even more memorable since he’ll have a lot of new material to choose from because his new album drops today, a day before he takes the stage at Air + Style. His new digital release, “Skin Companion EP II,” is the second follow up to his critically acclaimed 2016 Grammy-nominated album, “Skin.” The new release will be available on vinyl in May. Winter Stage, 10 p.m.
Sunday
XYLO: One of the best things about music festivals is that you can catch emerging young bands on the rise, and XYLO is one such band that you should keep your eye on. Made up of brother and sister Chase and Paige Duddy, this indie-pop duo mixes electronica and hip-hop beats with melodic and often dark vocals. Summer Stage, 3:45 p.m.
TV on the Radio: While it’s nice to discover new music at festivals, it’s also cool to see veterans show the youngsters how it’s done, which will be the case with the Brooklyn-based band TV on the Radio. The group has been together for more than a decade earning respect for their innovation, genre-bending sounds and influence on younger rock groups. Winter Stage, 6 p.m.
Louis the Child: People will likely recognize this Chicago duo’s popular single “It’s Strange,” since its racked up millions of plays on Soundcloud and Spotify. While both members of the EDM duo are still very young, just barely out of high school, they are quickly becoming a group to watch. They’ve been praised by such artists as Taylor Swift and cite such musical influences as Flume and Madeon in their music. Summer Stage, 7 p.m.
YG: Fans of West Coast rap better not miss YG when he takes the stage at Air + Style. The Compton native is all about straight up gangsta rap, after all the initials stand for “Young Gangsta.” He has released a pair of critically acclaimed albums: his 2014 debut “My Krazy Life” and the followup, 2016’s “Still Brazy.” Winter Stage, 8 p.m.
Major Lazer: Whatever you do, don’t leave Air + Style early because you’ll miss out on one dynamic show by Major Lazer. This EDM powerhouse was founded by producer, rapper and singer Diplo, who has worked with the likes of Beyonce, Usher, Snoop Dogg and Madonna. The group includes producer and DJ Jillionaire and Walshy Fire. Winter Stage, 10:10 p.m.
