HOGWARTZ (sort of) — Shall we call this new Springsteen vault offering a Bruce rarity, an oddity or both?

The Boss revealed last fall that in 2001 he submitted a demo of a new ballad to film director Chris Columbus, in hopes he would use the tune in the first Harry Potter movie: “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone.” It was not used in the film.

Flash forward to Friday morning and the song, titled “I’ll Stand By You Always” has leaked online, first on the Springsteen torrent site Jungleland, and first reported by the entertainment blog Hypable.

Springsteen said in an interview with BBC Radio 2 in October that he penned the nearly six-minute song between 1998 and 2000, and wrote it for his oldest son, Evan. Bruce was reportedly inspired after reading J.K. Rowling’s fantasy books to his younger son, Sam.

On the song and its gelling with the Harry Potter franchise, Springsteen told BBC: “It was something that I thought would have fit lovely. At some point, I’d like to get it into a children’s movie of some sort because it was a pretty lovely song.”

The first verse and chorus go:

You wake me in the night and your tears falling down / come let me dry them for you

I wish I could tell a story / chase away all those ghosts you’ve got inside of you

A story of heroes that fight on at any cost / of a kingdom of love to be won or lost

We’ll fight here together ’til victory is won / come take my hand ’til the morning comes

Just close your eyes

I’ll stand by you always, always, always

I’ll stand by you always, always, always
