Holy Angels Catholic School on Aurora’s West Side will be closed Friday because of student illnesses.

Nearly 20 percent of the school’s student body was home sick Thursday, Principal Tonya Forbes said in an emailed statement. The school had seen a steady increase during the week in the number of students with flu-like symptoms, upper respiratory infections or strep throat, she said.

"It’s our hope that in giving the student body an additional day off it would help to stem the tide of illnesses we are experiencing," Forbes said. "It should also help those students who are already sick have a chance to get well over Friday-Monday."

Teachers and maintenance staff will disinfect classrooms, and the school will be aired out, she said.

Holy Angels includes preschool through eighth-grade classes and has over 400 students, according to its website.

Holy Angels is not the only school that has had to cancel classes due to illnesses this winter. In January, about 800 St. Charles East High School students called in sick with symptoms corresponding to a norovirus infection. The mass illness forced St. Charles District 303 to cancel classes for two days.
