Niantic on Thursday released an update for “Pokemon Go” that adds 80 new monsters to the game. The second generation creatures from “Pokemon Gold” and “Silver” include evolutions for existing monsters like Golbat and new ‘mons like Tyranitar.
The developer had already released a handful of Gen II monsters, all of which were baby versions of existing Pokemon such as Pichu, Magby and Elekid.
Niantic previewed the expansion on Tuesday with a video and blog post that teased new encounter mechanics and berries to use in-game.
The New Pokedex is the first major update to “Pokemon Go” since it debuted last summer. Back then, the game took Portland by storm — several community groups dedicated to hunting the monsters popped up on Facebook.
In the first days of the game’s release, police issued public safety warnings urging players to stay in groups to avoid robbery. On the lighter side, “Pokemon Go” brought strangers together — one 5-year-old’s birthday party was saved by a group of players when nobody RSVP’d.
The “Pokemon Go” update — true to the series as it developed on Nintendo’s handhelds –even adds new encounter music when players come across a catchable creature.
With the Gen II update, the total number of creatures players can encounter in “Pokemon Go” tops out at 251. That’s a far cry from the 802 available to players since the release of “Pokemon Sun” and “Moon” last fall.
