“Scandal” Season 6, episode 2 recently saw Olivia Pope (Kerry Washington) searching for proof that Cyrus Beene (Jeff Perry) was responsible for having Frankie Vargas (Ricardo Chavira) assassinated.
In “Hardball,” a series of flashbacks showed the events that took place before the elections. At the time, Frankie had a heated encounter with his runningmate, Cyrus. The governor was very angry at the latter, and he even said that if he becomes president, he will make sure Cyrus will be sent to prison. When Olivia got a hold of the footage, she shows it to Abby (Darby Stanchfield) as a way of proving that Cyrus and Frankie weren’t in good terms so the former has a motive to have him killed. However, Cyrus is still considered innocent until proven guilty and another character may still be responsible for Frankie’s death.
Elsewhere in the episode, it was finally explained why Mellie (Bellamy Young) and Marcus (Cornelius Smith Jr.) budding relationship in the Season 5 finale did not progress. In another flashback, it was revealed that Olivia asked Abby to offer Marcus the position of White House press secretary so that he will stay away from Mellie, and the latter can focus on her campaign. But by the looks of it, Mellie and Marcus’ relationship may still be revisited in future episodes.
Meanwhile, President Fitzgerald Grant (Tony Goldwyn) urged Cyrus and Mellie to show a united front. After endorsing the former, Cyrus told Mellie that she could be his vice president. As tempting as this offer is, Mellie doesn’t want Cyrus to be her boss so she refused. Mellie may have been discouraged after losing to Frankie, but it’s still possible that she will continue to fight to become the next president of the United States.
