“Suits” star Gabriel Macht admitted that filming the dream sequence between his character, Harvey, and Sarah Rafferty’s Donna at the beginning of the show’s winter premiere was very uncomfortable.
“It’s very awkward for both Sarah and I,” Macht told Rotten Tomatoes when asked what it was like to film his kissing scene with Rafferty. “We’ve been friends for so many years, and our kids are friends, her husband and I are really, really close buddies. My wife, Jacinda [Barrett] and Sarah — we’re all very, very connected on so many different levels, so we’re professional, and we got through it and it was all good. The scene turned out great.”
The dream sequence, which basically shows a post-coital Harvey and Donna, was directed by Macht and Rafferty’s co-star Patrick J. Adams. In an interview with E! News, Adams — who plays Mike Ross on the USA Network series — said that getting to direct the episode opener was a pleasure.
“The opening scene of the episode is one of my favorite scenes in ‘Suits’ history because it’s obviously a moment that I think a lot of fans of the show have been waiting to see,” Adams said. “Even though it’s got a little twist to it, I still think it’s a really satisfying and exciting way to come back into the show and throw people right into the deep end.”
“It’s a scene that I typically wouldn’t have a lot of experience,” the 35-year-old actor said. “If it was a normal episode I wouldn’t be there, obviously, shooting it and I wouldn’t have anything to do with it because it doesn’t have to do with Mike Ross, so getting to be a part of an iconic moment of the show was an exciting moment as a director.”
As to how series creator Aaron Korsh came up with the sequence, he told TVLine: “We were just sitting down to write that episode, and it just came out. [Laughs] I wrote it, I showed it to people, and they were like, ‘Yes, let’s put it in there.’”
“It’s fun for me to put things like that in and just see what they’re going to do to the viewers,” he added. “I know it gives some fans what they’re looking for without totally giving them what they’re looking for. For me, it’s a way, maybe, to have my cake and eat it, too. Give fans what they want and not give them so much of what they want that they stop wanting it — that’s the idea.”
