JERSEY CITY – Few cars are braving the steep streets of Jersey City’s Western Slope and the sound of shovels is absent as most people seem resigned to stay put and leave their cars parked as Winter Storm Niko blankets the area in snow this morning.

At the corner of Liberty Avenue and North Street Jaimeen Patel opened the Smart Sai Deli at 7 a.m. as usual. He said he lives a few doors away.

“No business yet,” said Patel at 9:10 a.m. “It’s slow.”

Chris Sawyer of Columbia Avenue was ready to make some cash shoveling snow and was waiting for his helpers to show up.

“I got a crew and we go out every year,” said Sawyer. “It’s my son and his friends.” He said they charge $12.50 an hour or a straight $20 to dig out a residence. It’s up to the customer.

“We make the best money on storefronts,” said Sawyer who hoped his crew would haul in as much as $400 today.

It appears that a few inches of snow had blanketed the Slope by about 9 a.m. but it was difficult to judge because the wind was sweeping the accumulation into snow drifts.

North Street was plowed and salted around 9:20 a.m. to facilitate vehicle using the steep road to get down to Tonnelle Avenue.

The National Weather Service is predicting six to 10 inches of snow in the area by the end of the day.

There have been numerous closures due to the weather, including the county courts. The courts are located in the Hudson County Administration Building and the William J. Brennan Courthouse, both on Newark Avenue in Jersey City.

The roads across the county are relatively empty, because of the snow, but there have been a few accidents. In Hoboken, an NJ Transit bus apparently slid into a fence near the Jersey City border.  In Jersey City, there was a crash on Christopher Columbus Drive this morning.

Two big speeches were postponed today. One of Jersey City Mayor Steve Fulop’s State of the City speeches had been scheduled for tonight. The State of the County Address by county Executive Tom DeGise has been postponed and rescheduled for Feb. 16 at 4 pm. Today’s freeholders’ meeting has been rescheduled for 5 p.m. the same day.
