Because of a winter storm that has already covered most of Somerset County with at least 3 inches of snow as of 11 a.m. Thursday, all Somerset County offices have been closed.

The storm could dump as much as a foot of snow before ending later on Thursday. The only power outages being reported as of 11 a.m. are in Bernardsville, where a motor-vehicle accident damaged a pole, according to Jersey Central Power and Light. Power is expected to be restored by noon.

The closing of Somerset County government offices also impacts county-operated transportation services, which have been cancelled, and all other offices and programs.

Most schools in Somerset County announced Wednesday night that they would be closed. County senior centers are also closed, as are municipal buildings and county libraries.

Recycling pickups for Thursday have also been postponed because of the weather. Scheduled recycling pickups in Martinsville, Thomae Park, Warren and Watchung have been postponed until Friday.

Somerset County Meals on Wheels clients are asked to use the non-perishable meals sent out earlier in the season, according to information released by the county on Thursday morning.

If clients do not have frozen meals, or if they have lost power, they can use Heater Meals, shelf-stable meals that come in an orange box. Directions for heating are on the box. Heater Meals are not intended for use in a microwave oven.
