CLEVELAND, Ohio — How do you make a black malt and barley beer even more intense? Put it in a barrel that held bourbon for a couple of months.

Blackout Stout, the Russian Stout offered by Great Lakes Brewing Company, gets a special treatment every year when it’s aged over seven months in oak barrels from Buffalo Trace Distillery in Kentucky.

The barrel aging process intensifies and alters the natural flavors of the beer, while taking on new ones. Thirty-six barrels have been produced for this year (that’s over 2,500 bottles), along with Barrel Aged Barley Wine, a barley wine style ale made with Simcoe hops.

Bottles will be on sale only at the Great Lakes Brewing Company gift shop starting Friday, Feb. 10 at 10 a.m.
