JERSEY CITY — A fire broke out in the basement of an old city school on Saturday night, and hours later firefighters were back at the scene when smoke appeared again.
The fire was reported sometime around 9:45 p.m. at the former School 20. It appears the fire started in the boiler room of the Danforth Avenue building.
At about 10 a.m., workers could be seen going in and out of the building. Salt covered the surrounding streets to keep the road from freezing from water used to extinguish the fire the night before.
Then just before noon, firefighters were called back to the building on reports of a rekindled fire.
Photos by Jersey Journal freelance photographer Joe Shine show the floor of a former classroom ripped out as a result of the boiler below malfunctioning.
Additional information about the fire was not immediately available.
In September, School 20 opened a new building down the street was was dedicated to Maya Angelou. It’s unclear if any students or school activities will be affected as a result of fire. School officials could not immediately be reached for comment.
