Weill Cornell Medicine has received a $12.5 million gift from the Feil family to build a 16,200-square-foot student center on the campus of its Upper East Side medical school, the institution will announce today.

Real estate developer Jeffrey Feil is vice chair of Weill Cornell’s Board of Overseers and chief executive of the Feil Organization, a Manhattan-based real estate firm that owns and manages more than 26 million square feet of retail, commercial and industrial properties and about 5,000 residential units.

The Feil Organization’s portfolio was valued at more than $7 billion in 2013, according to The Wall Street Journal.

The donation increases the Feil family’s support for Weill Cornell to about $90 million, which includes funding for the Belfer Research Building, endowed professorships and student scholarships. Their philanthropy has also helped support the creation of a neurology unit and a translational neuroscience research center.

“Our longstanding relationships with many of Weill Cornell Medicine’s esteemed physicians have been a source of inspiration for us—they exemplify the very best in science and medicine, and demonstrate how to make a difference in the world,” Feil said in a statement.

The new student center will include space for instruction, study and collaboration, increasing the area dedicated to student activities by 75%. It will also include meeting places for the school’s more than 60 student groups and a student lounge.

“The direction we’re going in [in medicine] is a team-based approach, and this student center will really allow for that,” said Raul Martinez-McFaline, a fifth-year MD-PhD student at Weill Cornell Medicine, who serves on its Board of Overseers and provided feedback on the center’s design.
