NEWARK — At least one person was injured and at least one law enforcement officer fired shots Wednesday afternoon in Newark’s North Ward, law enforcement sources confirmed.

Police swarmed an area near Broadway and Kearny street around 5 p.m. It was not immediately clear how many officers fired their weapons or if any of the injured were hit by the officers or a suspect.

The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office confirmed its investigators were at the scene of a police-involved shooting near Broadway and Kearny Street.

Chief Assistant Prosecutor Thomas Fennelly said the incident was developing and he could Oslobet not immediately confirm information about injuries or how many people were involved in the shooting. 

Newark police referred questions to the prosecutor’s office, which investigates police shootings.
