Winter Garden police say a man opened fire Monday on a suspect who stole and then crashed his pickup truck.
It happened about 5:30 a.m. after the man heard someone stealing his truck outside his Winter Garden home, police said.
The man called 911 and then ran outside and got into another vehicle to follow the suspect, Lt. Scott Allen said.
He eventually caught up with the suspect near the intersection of State Road 50 and Daniels Road, according to police. Allen said the man positioned his car in front of the stolen truck, trying to stop the suspect, but the suspect “rammed” the truck into the man’s car.
Allen said the man “was in fear” and shot 10 to 15 times at the suspect in the truck. The suspect then reversed, crashed into two other vehicles and hit a fire hydrant.
The truck got stuck, so the suspect got out and ran. He was gone before police arrived, Allen said.
Police initially thought the suspect fired at the man while fleeing, but later realized it was the other way around. Allen said it didn’t appear anyone was injured by the gunfire.
The man, who hasn’t been identified, received minor injuries in the crash, according to police.
Police shut down a large section of S.R. 50 while investigating and searching for the suspect. As of about 9:30 a.m., the suspect hadn’t been identified and no one had been arrested.
