Edith Gagné and Antoine Lemieux were married at the age of 20, in 1947. Now 95 years old, the lovebirds are still as much in love.
“It’s a love that continues all the time, I can’t stop this love,” said Mr. Lemieux, addressing his wife.
The Villa Vents et Marées de Sainte-Flavie wanted to organize a surprise dinner to highlight the event. Several area residents were present to celebrate the 75th wedding anniversary.
The two lovers could also count on their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
“We are so happy that everyone is here for us. It’s nice to see everyone,” said Antoine Lemieux.
The organizers have reserved a gift that the lovers particularly appreciated; they had the chance to renew their wedding vows.
Unforgettable first meeting
Despite a story that makes more than one dream, the couple reveals that love at first sight occurred at the former companion of Antoine Lemieux, when the three were reunited in the same house.
Edith Gagné recalls these memories with a laugh.
Their wedding anniversary also caught the attention of Prime Ministers Justin Trudeau and François Legault, who both sent a letter of congratulations to the couple.
“It’s impressive to reach 75 years of marriage, especially in today’s life,” said the couple’s daughter, Diane Lemieux. We couldn’t be more proud.”
The couple’s granddaughter Nadia Pouliot is delighted with the happiness of the nonagenarians.
“We see that they are good together, that’s what is fun, she said. At this age, this is not the case for all couples. They are so beautiful to see.”
