H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center recently launched its Edgecomb Society, it called on Grammy-winning artist Paul Anthony to bring together an entourage to entertain guests.

Anthony and Kathy Sledge of Sister Sledge made it to Tampa on Feb. 9, but Anthony’s brother, Lou "Bowlegged Lou" George and Alia Davis from Allure, got snowed in. So Moffitt officials needed someone to "volunteer" and fill the void.
Who better than LaWanda Courtney, Moffitt’s director of volunteer services? She joined Anthony on stage at the evening event in Moffitt’s Stabile Center after a quick afternoon rehearsal.
Courtney, who regularly sings at Bell Shoals Baptist Church in Brandon, shared with Anthony during the rehearsal she sings alto. Anthony wanted her to join him for All Cried Out, a classic 1980s slow jam recorded by Lisa-Lisa and Cult Jam and produced by Anthony and his Full Force group.
She wanted to take the song down an octave, but he convinced her she could handle the higher vocals.
From all accounts, Courtney acquitted herself marvelously on All Cried Out and another tune. She confessed to being a bit nervous, but it didn’t show at all.
The Edgecomb Society will seek to ensure equitable health outcomes and the elimination of cancer-health disparities among African-Americans. Anthony has agreed to work with the center to bring in various stars to perform at fundraisers.
