Ten high school boys soccer teams from the North Bay League and Sonoma County League were slotted into the North Coast Section championship tournament bracket determined Sunday by the section selection committee. But only three of those 10 teams will start the tournament with home games.
All first-round matches will be Wednesday with the winners advancing to NCS quarterfinal matches Saturday. Championship matches will be played Saturday, Feb. 25.
The highest-seeded team from the region was NBL champion Montgomery, which was awarded a No. 5 seed in the Division 2 tournament and will face No. 12 seed Tamalpais on Wednesday in the first round. The Vikings finished the regular season with a 17-4-3 overall record, 12-2-0 in NBL games.
Santa Rosa, which was 13-8-2 overall and 8-5-1 against NBL opponents, was seeded No. 8 in the Division 1 tournament and will begin tournament play at home Wednesday against No. 9 seed College Park. Elsie Allen (10-5-0 overall, 9-3-0 SCL), co-champion of the league with Healdsburg, was seeded eighth in the Division 3 bracket and will start its tournament Wednesday at home against No. 9 seed Albany.
Four other Redwood Empire teams will join Montgomery in the Division 2 bracket: No. 10 seed Petaluma (10-6-0, 7-5-0 SCL) will play Wednesday at No. 7 Campolindo; No. 11 Windsor (14-4-2, 11-2-1 NBL) will be at No. 6 Las Lomas; No. 14 Rancho Cotate (13-7-0, 9-5-0 NBL) will be at No. 3 Richmond, and No. 15 Casa Grande (9-9-5, 6-5-3 NBL) will be at No. 2 Acalanes.
Three Redwood Empire teams will join Elsie Allen in the Division 3 bracket: No. 10 Healdsburg (11-5-0, 9-3), co-champion of the SCL with Elsie Allen, will be at No. 7 St. Mary’s; No. 11 Sonoma Valley (8-7-2, 8-4-0) will be at No. 6 Kennedy, and No. 15 Analy (9-8-2, 5-6-1) will be at No. 2 Marin Academy.
No Redwood Empire team has won a section championship in the winter soccer season, although this marked only the second season for NBL teams and first for SCL teams after switching from the fall.
Last year’s winter soccer champions were Monte Vista in Division 1, De Anza in Division 2 and Ygnacio in Division 3 in the boys tournament. Empire boys teams won numerous section championships in the fall seasons, including Tomales in Division 3 in 2016.
