Officials are trying to spread the word that school will be open as normal Friday after a fake Twitter account posted Oviedo High would be closed due to violence.

The tweet was posted Thursday night on an account that mirrored the Seminole County Public Schools’ official Twitter account, even mimicking the district’s handle @SCPSInfo.

A press release was posted to the fake account, @SCPSInformation, that claimed due to the “excessive amount of student-elicited violence,” this week, classes would be canceled Friday.

The false release continued with explaining the closure was also due to “multiple rumored incidents” that were “also being monitored.”

Both Oviedo High School along with the official account for Seminole County Public Schools posted to Twitter that the school would be open and the account was a fake.

Police are investigating the incident and “those responsible will be held accountable,” the district said in a release.

The district also said if school was cancelled, parents would have gotten a phone call, local media would have been alerted and officials would have posted the notifications on all their social media outlets.
