The Central Council of Muslims in Germany (ZMD) has condemned a presumed attack on a see Muslim girl in Osnabrück as “shameful and racist”. The act is directly related to a “spreading antimuslim climate in society,” Central Council shared. He also lamented a “generally growing anti-Islamism” and a “rampant and especially anti-Muslim everyday racism” in Germany.

The incident had occurred on Saturday in context of riots around a football match between VfL Osnabrück and FC Carl Zeiss Jena. The offender had stepped out of a group of about five to six men and had dragged towel from his head to child waiting at a bus stop, it was said in media reports. The girl was easily injured.
“For years, re have been debates on headscarf on backs of Muslim women,” said Deputy ZMD chairman Nurhan Soykan. These debates have reached ir provisional climax in recent weeks. The Basic Law guarantees freedom of religion and supports principle of “living and letting Life”. That will be heeded by majority. “Yet again, we are witnessing an unbearable debate on exclusion against Muslims and a populist criminalization of Muslims on part of certain politicians, which is increasingly reflected in such attacks on Muslims.”
The Osnabrück Integration Commissioner Seda Rass-Turgut also condemned act. Freedom of religion is a fundamental right, said Rass-Turgut. Moreover, diversity and tolerance should be values that shaped a society. “A peaceful co-existence of different nationalities, cultures, religions and genders should be a top priority for our society, as well as a respectful and respectful approach that does not place such deeds.”
