Congrats to the teens at Edward R. Murrow High School for proving, yet again, they’re the kings and queens of the checkmate.

On Sunday, the whizzes won the citywide high-school championship for a record 20th time — and the Midwood school has only had a team since 1981. According to the team’s coach, Eliot Weiss, no other city team has won even 10 championships.

More than 1,000 students from public and private schools competed in the two-day tournament.

All this prolonged excellence hasn’t gone unnoticed: The 2005 team was the subject of Michael Weinreb’s Quill Award-winning “The Kings of New York: A Year Among the Geeks, Oddballs and Geniuses who Make Up America’s Top High-School Chess Team.”

Next up: The state tournament, March 11-12, in Saratoga Springs, where Murrow will be looking for another “20th” title. And, if all goes well, they can lead to the nationals (for a possible ninth US championship) starting April 27 in Columbus, Ohio.
