Southbound lanes of Interstate 55 were closed near Route 30 in Plainfield late Friday night as state troopers continued to investigate a multi-vehicle crash that involved a semi-truck.
One person was airlifted to Good Samaritan Hospital in critical condition, according to a news release from the Plainfield Fire Protection District. Five other patients were transported to Presence St. Joseph Medical Center in Joliet with serious, but non-life threatening, injuries, according to the release. Three additional patients were treated and released on the scene.
Rescue crews had to extricate two drivers from their cars.
State police said there were two crashes on Interstate 55 — one near Route 30 and one further north near Renwick Road. The first crash, near Route 30, was a single vehicle crash without injuries, said Illinois State Police Trooper Jennifer Kirinich. The second, more serious crash, occurred as vehicles were slowing down due to the first crash. The crash occurred around 4:31 p.m.
Lockport Fire Protection District and Romeoville Fire Department assisted Plainfield on the scene of the crash while Naperville Fire Department, Oswego Fire Protection District and Troy Fire Protection District provided coverage at the Plainfield fire stations during the incident.
