Washington’s bizarre political season is sprouting fruit in St. Petersburg.
Telephone poles throughout St. Pete’s Old Northeast neighborhood on Wednesday were festooned with sarcastic fliers calling out Sen. Marco Rubio for his confirmation votes on Betsy DeVos for U.S. Secretary of Education and Rex Tillerson for Secretary of State.
Reminiscent of an AMBER Alert, the fliers are mockingly titled "Missing – U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (FL-R)."
"He has not been seen at his office for weeks and has not responded to hundreds of emails, phone calls and voicemails," the fliers charge.
Tear strips run across the bottom of the fliers that have Rubio’s Florida and Washington D.C. office numbers. "Demand he do his job," the flier instructs.
Rubio received pressure to vote against Devos in a national campaign. He was similarly pressured to vote against Tillerson, whom he roughed up during Senate questioning. But despite his concerns, Rubio voted for Tillerson, and DeVos.
Whoever produced the fliers is anyone’s guess. One thing the fliers don’t have is the name or the group who produced them.
