“Fifty Shades Darker” earned more revenue over the weekend compared to its opening day in the United States.
According to Variety, the Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson-starrer whipped “Lego Batman” and “John Wick: Chapter 2” on Friday night with its $21.5 million earning from 3,710 cinemas across the country. Within a span of three days, “Fifty Shades Darker” received a total of approximately $46 million. However, the figures are still so much lower compared to the opening day for “Fifty Shades of Grey.” At that time, the movie received $81 million. The film went on to earn $166 million domestically and $571 million worldwide.
The revenue for “Fifty Shades Darker” did not come as a surprise even though the sequel was rated B+. “Fifty Shades of Grey” only received a C- rating when it was released in February 2015. Since “Fifty Shades of Grey” is the first film to have been released from the franchise, this was also the first time viewers had the chance to see book characters, Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele for the big screen.
Meanwhile, movie critics have also shared their thoughts about “Fifty Shades Darker,” as well as Dornan and Johnson’s acting. Rolling Stone gave the film a 0.5 percent rating and called it an “incredibly idiotic movie.” The Guardian writer Catherine Shoard gave the movie one star and said that some of the scenes were “steamy as a greasy spoon and as erotic.”
“Fifty Shades Darker” followed the lives of Christian and Anastasia after they decided to get back together. While fixing their relationship, they were troubled by some people from Christian’s past, namely, Mrs. Robinson (Kim Basinger), Leila Williams (Bella Heathcote) and Jack Hyde (Eric Johnson).
