Political expression is a good look for Chance the Rapper. The artist debuted Thursday a commemorative capsule collection of Obama-inspired garb.
The “Thank You Obama” clothing line, designed by Chicago designer Joe Freshgoods, was released online Thursday. Chance released the campaign images on social media the same day, where he was pictured wearing items from the seven-piece line. After the collection went live the site even crashed, according to Harper’s Bazaar.
Chance was the prime model for the collection. The rapper met the former president during the Obama administration.
The new “Thank You Obama” line features an “America” Obama All-Star Jersey and a series of T-shirts and hoodies that bear the “Thank you Obama” phrase. There are even shirts devoted to Michelle Obama and Malia Obama. Context, of course, is everything, here. The line’s signature phrase is a playoff of the sarcastic “Thanks Obama!” memes used by critics of the administration.
Freshgoods’ message, however, was one of sincere gratitude for the former POTUS and his work for the country.
“With this project I wanted to timestamp a period in my life where I felt like I can do whatever I wanted to do and be whatever I wanted to be,” Freshgoods wrote on the website. “The night Obama won his first term gave me so much hope, especially & most importantly as a black man. I decided to make a collection saying ‘thank you’ and give me something to smile at every now and then when I look in the closet.”
The line also includes a King Obama Poster, and the collection ranges from $28 to $150 in price. Shoppers can find the apparel on ThankUObama.us. but should act fast – the clothes could sell out soon, due to popularity and cult status of Joefreshgoods.
