Haven’t you missed The Sherlocks? “NCIS” Season 14, episode 14 saw these privately funded investigators help Gibbs (Mark Harmon) and his team solve the death of a Petty Officer named Maya Kettering. Maya is found strangled in her house in a small town outside Washington, D.C.
Gibbs must work with the town’s Sheriff in order to find Maya’s killer. Guess who the Sheriff is? Walt Osorio (Richard Riehle), a member of The Sherlock Consortium. The NCIS team quickly learns that there are two new members who have joined The Sherlocks: Dr. James Palmer (Brian Dietzen) and probie Anthony DiNozzo, Sr. (Robert Wagner). Joining these two newbies are veteran investigators Judith McKnight (Jessica Walter) and Lyle (Todd Louiso).
Needless to say, Gibbs is not happy working with The Sherlocks. While he, Bishop (Emily Wickersham) and The Sherlocks visit the ship in which Maya was working, McGee (Sean Murray) works on ground at the Sheriff’s Office.
Gibbs and The Sherlocks find out that Maya was a good catholic. She used to coordinate the ship’s Catholic services. Meanwhile, McGee learns that Maya’s husband Mike (Nick Jandl) hasn’t been home even once in last three months. Where has he been?
Abby (Pauley Perrette) works her magic and uses Mike’s phone to locate him. Elsewhere, DiNozzo, Sr. asks for Gibbs’ blessing to pursue Judith since they have history together. Gibbs corrects him by informing him that Judith and him were never together.
Torres (Wilmer Valderrama) and Bishop go to Mike’s new address in San Francisco and inform him and his girlfriend Darlene (Austin Highsmith) that his wife is dead. Darlene is shocked to learn that Mike, her fiancé and not boyfriend, has a wife. Mike is even more shocked that the NCIS team informed Darlene that he’s married. He isn’t too upset about news of his wife’s death.

Mike reveals that he was lonely after Maya got deployed. He had a one-night stand with Darlene that evolved into a relationship and now he’s convinced that she’s his soulmate.
Quinn (Jennifer Esposito) points out that killing Maya would solve Mike’s problems. Her husband may have wanted a divorce in order to marry Darlene but she may have refused since she is a good Catholic. She may have opted to work on their marriage. Killing Maya would help him marry Darlene who is also pregnant with their child.
Unfortunately, Mike has a solid alibi. He was in a plane from San Francisco to D.C. when his life was killed. He also had a layover in Chicago. So it seems like he couldn’t have murdered his wife. Or could he?
Thanks to a suggestion by DiNozzo, Sr. Gibbs discovers that Mike hired someone who looks like him and switched places. At the San Francisco airport, after Mike completed his security check, he gave his jacket, cap and ticket to a man who had a layover in Chicago. This man then gave him his jacket, cap and ticket that had a nonstop flight to D.C. Then, in Washington, they switched places.
It’s a good plan but they can’t prove Mike did it. So, Gibbs hatches a brilliant plan of his own. He gets Mike to an interrogation room and in another room, gets Lyle to dress up in the same jacket and cap as the man Mike paid off to switch places with him. Mike thinks that the man he paid off is writing a confession in another interrogation room. It’s enough to make him confess to his crime. Moral of the story: It’s always the husband!
