TRENTON — An additional 70 state troopers will be deployed over Super Bowl weekend to combat drunken driving, authorities announced Friday.

Officials from the New Jersey State Police said that the division will be increasing patrols across the state from Saturday to Monday.

A statement announcing the deployment said the troopers would focus on drunken driving, aggressive driving, seatbelt usage, cell phone violations and distracted driving.

Super Bowl Sunday is considered one of the most dangerous days of the year for traffic fatalities. Local and county police around New Jersey are also stepping up patrols.

“The only way that you can guarantee that you’re a winner this weekend is by not getting behind the wheel after drinking,” Col. Rick Fuentes, the head of the State Police, said. “If you plan on drinking alcohol, make sure that you either have a place to stay, a designated driver, or an available car service for a safe trip home.”
