On Jan. 27, International Holocaust Day, Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers’ memorial statement invoked the USA’s unique global role: “We remain today what we have always been: the last, best hope for mankind.” I am bowled over by the irony of this claim in the context of last week’s executive actions.
The Holocaust began with the arbitrary and illegal acts of a leader elected by a minority of his countrymen. If the Germans had been able to resist Hitler’s illegal initial acts in seizing power, the Holocaust might not have occurred.
I call on my representative to have the courage and wisdom the Germans did not, and to speak out against President Trump’s arbitrary and illegal actions against immigrants. If she and other GOP leaders remain supine in the face of Trump’s unconstitutional assaults on our government, the next steps will much easier.
People around the world are far from viewing these events as the opening act of the “last, best hope of mankind.”
