“Stranger Things” Season 2 won’t premiere until later this year, but co-creators are already dropping some major storyline spoilers to whet fans’ appetite for the next installment of the hit Netflix series.
Matt Duffer, who created “Stranger Things” with his older brother Ross Duffer, told Entertainment Weekly one thing fans can expect from Season 2. According to him, the stakes will be much higher this time around since it won’t just be one person who will be in grave danger. “In Season 1, Will (Noah Schnapp) is in danger. And Season 2, it’s the town. The stakes escalate in that way,” he told the publication.
This comes after Netflix dropped the first trailer for “Stranger Things” Season 2 during Super Bowl LI on Sunday, Feb. 5. The 36-clip gave fans a preview of the upcoming season and confirmed the return of Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown). The co-creators and cast of the series have kept mum on the subject of Eleven’s return since Season 1 ended, but the footage gives fans hope that they won’t be seeing the last of her yet.
In addition to Brown and Schnapp, “Stranger Things” Season 2 will also see the return of Finn Wolfhard, Gaten Matarazzo, Caleb McLaughlin, Winona Ryder and David Harbour. The upcoming installment will also introduce series newbies Sean Astin and Paul Reiser.
During a January interview with Entertainment Tonight, the Duffer brothers, along with executive producers Shawn Levy and Dan Cohen, dished on Astin’s and Reiser’s characters and what they will bring to the show. They revealed that Astin’s character is a Radio Shack employee who is dating Joyce Byers (Ryder). “Sean Astin is a force. He’s gonna surprise. He’s just an incredible actor and he blows us away every day on set,” Ross gushed.
Shawn added that Astin’s character will definitely make an impact on fans, saying, “Bob is new to our weird Hawkins group, but he’s immediately memorable and I think people are going to be very surprised by where that takes them this year.”
As for Reiser, Ross explained that he has been “dreaming” of having the actor on the show. “The character [he plays] was named Paul Reiser for a long time and we were just like, ‘We should just [reach out]. We should just see if he wants to do it.’ And he did want to do it because his kid liked it! He didn’t understand the show but his kid explained it,” Matt added.
“Stranger Things” Season 2 is set to premiere on Netflix on Nov. 1. Meanwhile, check out the first sneak peek of the upcoming installment below and share your thoughts in the comments!
