Keiynan Lonsdale said that his “The Flash” character Wally feels a lot of pressure now that he’s the one who has to save Iris (Candice Patton) from Savitar.
“I think that’s a lot thrown on him,” Lonsdale told TV Guide of Wally’s responsibility to prevent his sister’s doomed fate at the hands of the Speed God in the near future. “It’s definitely frightening to him, for sure.”
Lonsdale doesn’t also think that Wally, a.k.a. Kid Flash, is emotionally prepared to handle the pressure of the situation. “I don’t think he is ready, but I don’t think you can be ready with something like this,” the Australian actor said of his newbie speedster character. “That’s what we’re dealing with all these characters. How are you supposed to be prepared — even when you know something is coming in the future — how are you supposed to be in the right head space for something so traumatic? I think that’s something that will challenge Wally, for sure, along with all of the characters.”
Despite all the pressure and anxiety that come with the task of saving Iris, Lonsdale said that Wally is “definitely prepared to step up.” “Part of him [is] excited at the idea of training with Barry and being allowed to be his full speedster self,” said Lonsdale.
It seems, however, that Wally starts questioning his capability to save Iris from Savitar when he fails to protect his sister from metahuman Clive Yorkin (Matthew Kevin Anderson) in tomorrow’s Season 3, episode 12 of the CW series.
In the trailer for the episode, Clive — who can kill people by causing them to decompose at an accelerated rate — breaks into Barry and Iris’ place and finds the journalist alone. Wally arrives at the scene as fast as he can but not fast enough to save his sister from Clive’s deadly touch.
When asked how failing to protect Iris from Clive affects Wally, Lonsdale told TV Guide: “I think that’s a struggle for him. I think that as much as he’s confident and cocky … there’s still a lot depth to him and he always wants to do good. He wants to do better. He wants to be the hero. He doesn’t want to let anyone down. That will be his biggest shortcoming: how judgmental he is of himself, secretly.”
“The Flash” Season 3, episode 12, titled “Untouchable,” airs on Tuesday, Feb. 7 at 8 p.m. EST on The CW.
