President Donald Trump will fly to Palm Beach and his Mar-a-Lago estate for a weekend with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, a golf enthusiast.
Trump and First Lady Melania Trump will dine tonight with Abe and his wife. And Trump is picking up the tab, not the government, after ethics issues were raised.
Mar-a-Lago is a private club and membership doubled to $200,000 after Trump won the presidency.
“Mr. Trump’s unresolved business conflicts are going to hang over almost everything he does,” Norman Eisen, who served as the chief ethics lawyer for the Obama administration from 2009 to 2011, told the Wall Street Journal. “This news provides one more reason that Mr. Trump should’ve made a clean break with his businesses instead of hanging onto his ownership interests.”
This is Trump’s second visit to Florida since his swearing in. He spent last weekend at his club then visited MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa on Monday. The travels have brought protests (with smaller groups of supporters on hand) and local concerns about the cost of security and loss of business.
But Trump has signaled he intends to visit Florida often.
