According to experts, citing the results of scientific studies, vitamin D could have a preventive role against the serious forms of the coronavirus. They call, on Tuesday, 19 January, to impose more to the the most fragile people.

At least that is what believes a collective made up of 73 experts from the French and six associations. Without scream to the miracle cure, this panel of experts, gathered around the Pr Annweiler, head of the department of geriatrics at the university hospital of Angers, published a press release, Tuesday 19 January, reporting the preventive effects of this steroid hormone against the serious forms of the disease, advanced by many scientific studies. As a result, this group has advocated for vitamin D to be more given to the French population.
“A growing number of scientific studies show that supplementation with vitamin D could help to reduce the infection by the Sars-CoV-2 as well as the risk of severe forms of Covid-19, of passages in the icu and death”, say the specialists, among which French Companies of endocrinology, pediatrics and geriatrics and gerontology. The tribune, passed to the AFP, points out that “40% to 50% of the French population are deficient in vitamin D and that this deficiency is much more significant in people at risk of severe forms of Covid-19”.

With France Inter radio, the professor Cédric Annweiler, head of the department of geriatrics at the university hospital of Angers, at the origin of the call, gives a precision on the effects identified of vitamin D. “Of the French studies showed that in the elderly, those who regularly received vitamin D supplements had a risk reduced by 90% to make a serious form of the disease if they contract the infection. Given the situation of the epidemic, even if it is not a replacement for vaccines and gestures barriers, it would be a pity to lose this additional weapon”. According to experts, the vitamin D could have a protective effect against the “storms cytokiniques” generated in the severe forms of the disease. This is because of its ability to regulate the synthesis of proteins, starting with the famous receptor ACE2, targeted by the Covid-19 to get in the cells.
