NEWARK — Police arrested two people in a stolen car that crashed into two other parked vehicles in Newark’s East Ward, authorities said Tuesday.

A Newark police officer spotted the stolen Toyota traveling the wrong way on Pennington Street around 12:30 p.m. Monday and tried to pull over the car, Public Safety Director Anthony Ambrose said in a statement.

The driver, Marcus Mendez, 39, of Newark, didn’t stop and crashed into parked vehicles near Mulberry and Camp Street, Ambrose added.

Officers arrested Mendez and his passenger, Kristina Laterza, 32, of Bloomfield, without further incident, according to authorities. The pair were charged with receiving stolen property and possession of hypodermic syringes. Mendez faces added charges of eluding and criminal mischief.

Police said the car was reported stolen in Newark Feb. 1.
