Retail trade registered an advance in its sales of 6.6% in May in relation to the same month of 2022, a rate 1.5 points higher than that of the previous month, as reported this Wednesday by the National Institute of Statistics (INE).

With the data for May, retail trade sales have posted six consecutive months of positive year-on-year rates.

Within the sector, sales of food products rose 4.3% year-on-year, while sales of other products increased 14.1% compared to May 2022.

Eliminating seasonal and calendar effects, retail trade billing increased by 6% in the fifth month of the year, a rate three tenths higher than that of April.

As regards employment, the sector registered an interannual increase in employment of 1.6% in May, a rate four tenths lower than that of the previous month. With this rebound, employment in retail trade has now accumulated 25 consecutive months of year-on-year increases.
