Close

As the area was whipped with strong winds and drifting snow, several local schools opted to close for the day.

There will be no classes in the Albany, Schenectady and Troy city school districts. The Brittonkill Central School District in Brunswick is also closed. Most other area schools are delaying the start of classes by at least two hours.

Snow showers and powerful winds will create the potential for snow drifts Monday, the National Weather Service reports. Gusts could reach 40 to 50 mph in the areas near the I-90 corridor.

A number of homes and businesses were left without power during Sunday’s storm but National Grid restored service to most customers by Monday morning. The company reports that about 1,500 customers in the New Scotland area are still without service at about 6:30 a.m.

Sunday’s storm was the second in less than a week. More than 20 inches of snow fell during that period.

The Capital Region is under a windy advisory until 7 p.m., NWS reports. A powerful storm off the New England coast will bring less than an inch of snow.

The wind will be strong enough to bring down tree branches already weighed down with snow.

The storm will move away from the region tonight and Tuesday, allowing for fair weather and decreasing winds.

A weak low pressure system will bring some light snow or snow showers to the region Tuesday night into Thursday, the NWS reports.
