In their latest quest to add pitching depth, the Cubs acquired pitcher Alec Mills from Kansas City for minor league outfielder Donnie Dewees.
Mills, 25, was designed for assignment. He had a 13.50 ERA in three relief appearances for the Royals, walking five and allowing three hits in 3 1/3 innings.
Mills — a 22nd round pick in the 2012 draft — went 5-5 with a 3.22 ERA in 24 appearances at the Double and Triple-A levels last season.
To make room for Mills on the 40-man roster, left-hander David Rollins was designated for assignment.
Mills had been designated for assignment by the Royals to make room for pitcher Jason Hammel.
Dewees, 23, batted .278 with 10 home runs and 103 RBI in 195 minor league games covering the last two seasons.
