Mike Montgomery inherited a runner at first base and needed only one out to earn the most treasured save in Chicago Cubs history.

But Montgomery scoffed at reports that Major League Baseball is considering a change in which extra innings will start with a runner at second base with no outs.

"I don’t think that’s going to happen," Montgomery said Monday. "I don’t think I’ve talked to a guy who likes that. I don’t like it. I haven’t talked to one player who has said, ‘yeah, that’s a good idea.’ "

Montgomery earned the first save of his career, in relief of Carl Edwards Jr., retired Michael Martinez on a grounder to third base to preserve the Cubs’ 8-7 win over the Cleveland Indians in 10 innings.

Meanwhile, reports stated that MLB will experiment with the rule change this summer in the rookie level Gulf Coast and Arizona leagues this summer.

"Maybe in high school, but not the majors,’’ Montgomery said.
