NEWARK — The Devils’ offense disappeared at the wrong time.

Nothing got through Ottawa Senators goalie Mike Condon as the Devils mustered just 21 shots in a 2-0 loss on Thursday at the Prudential Center.

The loss prevented the Devils from picking up any points against one of the teams they’re trailing in the Eastern Conference. The Devils entered the night five points out of a playoff spot.

The Senators broke through on a late second-period power play, capitalizing when Devils forward Michael Cammalleri went to the box for tripping.

The second power play of the night for Ottawa ended with Dion Phaneuf sending a shot from the top of the left circle into the back of the net, inside the right post.

That power-play goal capped a second period where the Devils were outshot 16-7, and the team began mixing up the bottom three lines to open the third period.

The Senators finished the game with two late goals, with defenseman Erik Karlsson sneaking a shot through the legs of Devils goalie Cory Schneider before it barely trickled over the line with 3:58 to play. Kyle Turris added an empty netter with 1:37 left.

Injuries: Defenseman Kyle Quincey is the only Devils currently injured. He missed his fourth straight game due to an upper body injury, and he was placed on injure reserve prior to Thursday’s game to make room for Beau Bennett on the active roster.

Coach John Hynes did not rule Quincey out from playing on Saturday or Sunday against the New York Islanders.

Bennett returned to the lineup on Thursday after missing nine games with a lower body injury.

Next up: The Devils will meet the New York Islanders for the first time this season when they play at 7 p.m. in Newark on Saturday before shifting to the Barclays Center in Brooklyn for a 6 p.m. game on Sunday.
