As the San Francisco 49ers rebuild their franchise, they have poached the front office and coaching staff of the Giants.
Martin Mayhew, who spent the past year as the Giants’ director of football operations, and Jeff Zgonina, who was the Giants’ assistant defensive line coach last season, are both headed to San Francisco for promotions.
Giants defensive end overview
Mayhew joined the Giants last February after serving as the Lions’ general manager from 2008-15. Mayhew worked with assistant general manager Kevin Abrams on managing the salary cap and negotiating player contracts. He also handled special projects assigned by general manager Jerry Reese.
The 49ers announced on Thursday that Mayhew has been hired as a senior personnel executive. His experience should be a valuable asset to new 49ers general manager John Lynch, who has never worked in a front office. Lynch and Mayhew were teammates with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers from 1993-96.
Zgonina will be hired as defensive line coach by new 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan, according to a Sporting News report. Zgonina played 17 years in the NFL for seven teams before retiring in 2009. He was hired last February by the Giants when Ben McAdoo took over as head coach.
Giants defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo frequently praised the work of “Z” and defensive line coach Patrick Graham last season.
There is no word yet on how — or if — the Giants will replace Mayhew and Zgonina. The majority of the Giants’ coaching staff is expected to return for next season.
