From inside the lines to out, Express-News staff writer Terrence Thomas takes a look back and a look ahead at the high school sports landscape:

Figure this

300: Career wins for Clemens boys basketball coach Clifton Ellis, who reached the milestone during the Buffaloes’ 80-68 victory against Humble Kingwood Park at the Brazosport tournament on Dec. 28. Ellis, who took Clemens and Wagner to the UIL state tournament, is 305-89 overall.

350: Career victories for Reagan boys basketball coach John Hirst, who attained the mark during the Rattlers’ 68-64 decision over Madison on Jan. 18. Hirst, who previously had head coaching stints at Los Fresnos and Stevens, is 354-183 overall.

Notable

Coaching move: Comal ISD has hired Alamo Heights volleyball coach Courtney Patton at Smithson Valley. She replaced Liana Gombert, who resigned following last season to become the district’s athletic director.

Patton was 323-133 in 11 seasons at Alamo Heights, leading the Mules to the Region IV-5A final in 2014 and the regional semifinals last season and in 2010.
