Donald Trump. A young Yankees starting pitcher you should know. His own job security.
The New York Post’s Steve Serby covered a ton of topics in a long Q&A with Yankees general manager Brian Cashman that was posted Saturday.
Here are five big takeaways:
1.) How was the late Yankees owner George Steinbrenner like President Trump? Cashman said that the pair share a similar “take no prisoners” style. “(Steinbrenner) just cared about getting from A to Z, and I get the sense that’s how Donald Trump approaches things,” the GM said. He added that both Trump and Steinbrenner could be described as “a man with a plan.”
2.) Why Yankees fans should stay optimistic: “We’re going in the right direction,” Cashman said. He added that he believed last year’s trade deadline fire sale was “vitally” important. The sell off saw the Yankees jettison big stars — Aroldis Chapman, Andrew Miller and Carlos Beltran — for packages of prospects that project to become the foundation upon which the next potential Yankees dynasty is built.
3.) Are Aaron Judge, Greg Bird and Gary Sanchez each potential 30-homer guys? Cashman said it was more likely Sanchez and Judge were better bets to hit 30 bombs, but all three are capable of at least 20 in a season.
4.) Who’s a pitcher that should be on Yankees fans’ radars? Triple-A righty Chance Adams, Cashman said. The Yankees drafted Adams as a multi-inning college reliever, turned him into a starting pitcher and watched him flourish in 2016. He went 13-1 with a 2.33 ERA, a 10.2 K/9 and a 2.8 BB/9 between High-A and Double-A. Adams could reach the majors in 2017.
5.) What would it take for the Yankees to reach the playoffs? Health and each player performing “up to their projected ceilings.” That sounds like a tall request.
