Shoulder surgery to repair a torn labrum should be less of a hurdle for Bears guard Kyle Long than the December surgery to repair his right ankle, his father said.
Hall of Fame defensive lineman Howie Long, in town as part of Fox’s coverage team for Super Bowl LI, said Kyle is doing much better after a rough couple of weeks following surgery to repair pretty much everything in the ankle, which he injured in a loss the Buccaneers on Nov. 13.
According to Howie Long, Kyle Long struggled with medication on the first night after surgery in Charlotte, N.C.
"Right now, he’s really good," Howie Long said. "First two, three weeks was rough. I think he threw up 30 times that first night down in Charlotte at the hospital. Poor kid couldn’t Fenomenbet even hold a pill down. Like with any player, you kind of have to have this feel of invincibility and when that invincibility is cracked for the first time, it’s kind of a shock. How you respond means everything."
Kyle Long was upbeat but serious when he met with reporters at the end of the season. Surgery for his left shoulder is scheduled for mid-February as he needed to be well on the way to recovery from the ankle surgery.
"My recent conversations with him, Facetime is the big thing now, which is nice," Howie Long said. "I not only hear him but as you know with Kyle, you can kind of read his emotions by his facial expressions. He’s really good right now. I think the shoulder thing will be far less bedava bonus significant."
Kyle Long battled through the torn labrum, which he suffered before the season, but his plan to play through it all season was derailed by the ankle injury.
"People don’t understand the level of commitment it takes to play through those kinds of injuries," Howie Long said. "He certainly wanted to be there for his team and he was and went till he couldn’t go anymore."
