The No. 1 Connecticut women’s basketball team goes for an epic milestone Monday night, as a victory over No. 6 South Carolina would give the Huskies 100 wins in a row.
UConn, which has won four consecutive national titles and has already set an NCAA record with 99 consecutive wins, last lost at Stanford in on Nov. 17, 2014. The Huskies’ winning streak includes a win over Oregon State in last season’s Final Four.
This season, UConn (24-0, 12-0 AAC) has topped nine teams currently ranked in the Associated Press top 25 — No. 4 Florida State, No. 4 Baylor, No. 17 DePaul, No. 8 Texas, No. 7 Notre Dame, No. 24 Kansas State, No. 12 Ohio State, No. 2 Maryland and No. 22 South Florida while rolling through AAC play. The 78-76 season-opening victory over Florida State was the Huskies’ closest game this season.
After losing stars Breanna Stewart, Moriah Jefferson and Morgan Tuck to the WNBA, this season the Huskies have been led by Katie Lou Samuelson (21.4 points per game), Napheesa Collier (19.1 points, 8.7 rebounds per game) and Kia Nurse (13.3 points, 4.3 assists per game).
South Carolina (21-2 and 10-1 SEC) ranks 14th nationally in both scoring defense (55.8 points allowed per game) and shooting percentage (46.6 percent). All-American A’ja Wilson is averaging 17 points and 7.1 rebounds per game, while Alaina Coates averages a double-double at 14 points and 11.5 rebounds per game.
