Tony Romo is not going to play for the Cowboys in 2017, but that doesn’t mean the Giants will be able to avoid their longtime nemesis.
What do Giants cuts mean for JPP?
Whether Romo is released or traded, he has four teams that particularly interest him, according to CBS Sports NFL insider Jason LaCanfora, who discussed Romo’s future on CBS Sports Radio’s Ferrall on the Bench. Three of those teams are on the Giants’ schedule next season.
“Tony has teams he’d rather be with than not. The four teams he’s most interested in are Houston, Kansas City, Denver and Arizona,” LaCanfora said. “It doesn’t mean those are the only four teams he’ll end up with.”
The Giants are scheduled to play at the Broncos and Cardinals in 2017. They will host the Chiefs. They will not play the Texans. The 49ers, another speculated potential Romo destination, are also on the Giants’ road schedule. There’s also the longshot scenario where the Redskins let Kirk Cousins hit free agency and try to get Romo if he’s cut by the Cowboys.
Even if Romo ends up with a team on the Giants’ schedule, the actual slate has not been set yet, and Romo’s injury track record makes it far from a certainty he would be available when his hypothetical new team met the Giants. If Romo is healthy, he’s not necessarily someone the Giants want to face, considering he has a 100.7 passer rating against them in his career.
