Northwestern 37, Notre Dame 33 – Rapid Recap
Northwestern wrestling team got three forfeits, two pins, one major decision and a decision to post a 37-33 win over Notre Dame in a District 11 Class 2A quarterfinal on Thursday night at Northern Lehigh High School.
Turning points: After Nicholas Vonelli got a pin at 126 pounds to put Notre Dame ahead 9-3, the Tigers took three of the next four bouts to take a 19-15 lead. Colin Rex had pin for Northwestern in 3:49 at 132. Two bouts later, Jackson Bernhard of Northwestern tied the match 15-15 with a fall in 53 seconds at 145. Caleb Clymer then posted a 9-1 major decision for the Tigers at 152 to make it 19-15.
Top performers: Rex and Bernhard had the pins for the Tigers. Clymer clinched the major decision for Northwestern. Vonelli, Mario Gordon (138) and EJ Medina (182) had pins for the Crusaders.
What it means: The fourth-seeded Tigers will face top-seeded Saucon Valley in the semifinals at 10:45 a.m. Saturday at Freedom High School. Northwestern improved to 7-4 overall on the season. The fifth-seeded Crusaders, who beat Palmerton 40-33 in the quarterfinals on a pin by Bob Fiedler, will face ninth-seeded Catasauqua in a consolation match at 9 a.m. Saturday at Freedom High School. The Crusaders are 8-6 on the season.
