CORVALLIS – Back-to-back College World Series title a decade ago has led to consecutive 10-year anniversary celebrations.
Oregon State baseball will honor its 2007 national championship team this season during the Beavers’ series against Utah from April 7-9. The Utes won the Pac-12 championship last year despite owning a losing record in non-conference play.
According to a team release, the Beavers will wear throwback gray uniforms with pinstripes and “OSU” lettering across the chest, replicas of the ones they wore when beating North Carolina in the championship game. They will also run clips from the 2007 season on the videoboard during the series and allow fans to take pictures with the College World Series trophy.
Oregon State provided a similar tribute to the 2006 College World Series team last season, bringing back numerous players from that roster and wearing throwback uniforms for a win over Washington.
Both national title trophies sit in the lobby of the Omaha Room at Goss Stadium. Last month, the athletic department published a page to crowdfund donations for a “hall of fame room” in that space. The crowdfund page has raised $84,700, well beyond the $50,000 target and past the $78,000 the department said would cover the full cost of the project.
On the baseball side, OSU opens its season Friday against Duke in Surprise, Arizona, starting a stretch of four games in four days.
Coach Pat Casey said Tuesday redshirt sophomore righty Sam Tweedt would join junior lefty Luke Heimlich and sophomore righty Bryce Fehmel in the starting rotation. Casey said the fourth starter will likely be situational.
“When you play four games in four days … we may have to use a guy in relief that we might have started,” he said. “We might be playing that last game with a mixed bag.”
Although positions have not been officially assigned, Nick Madrigal, Cadyn Grenier, KJ Harrison, Christian Donahue and Adley Rutschman are five players Casey said will be in the lineup on opening day.
