The four-peat is complete for the Phillipsburg High School wrestling team.
The Stateliners defeated West Morris Mendham, 35-24, in the NJSIAA Group 4 final on Sunday night at Toms River North’s Pine Belt Arena.
Turning point: Tyris Manley turned a big third period into a 7-2 decision over Peter Tringali, giving Phillipsburg a 16-15 advantage after eight bouts.
Cody Harrison followed quickly with a pin of Scott Zwillman in 1:39 to push the Stateliners firmly into the driver’s seat at 22-15.
Top performers: Phillipsburg heavyweight Justen Carabello pushed the pace against Mendham’s Blake Barrigan, earning a 2-0 decision thanks to a stalling point and an escape. (He also nearly fisherman suplexed his opponent.)
Jayson Zinsmeister emphatically took care of business at 145 pounds, pinning Connor McClellan in 1:57 and clinching the victory by making the score 31-18 with two bouts left.
What it means: Phillipsburg (16-1) has now won 21 state championships and four in a row.
