Phillipsburg 58, Sayreville 9 — NJSIAA North 2 Group 2 Rapid Recap

Phillipsburg High School’s wrestling team kicked off its quest for another state title with a methodical 58-9 victory Monday over Sayreville in the quarterfinal round of the NJSIAA North 2 Group 4 tournament.

Top performer: The Stateliners junior 145-pounder Brian Meyer hit a standing cradle to wrap up and pin Aaron Bartlett in 8 seconds in the second bout of the night.

It was the second fastest fall in program history. Former Stateliners standout and current Centenary College head wrestling coach John Garriques holds the record with a 6-second pin back in 1997.

Hurrying things up: The Stateliners recorded five of their eight pins on the night in under a minute.

Jayson Zinsmeister (35 seconds at 145), Robert Melise (53 seconds at 220), Travis Jones (13 seconds at 113), Tyris Manley (56 seconds at 120) joined Meyer in the under-60 seconds club.

What it means: Phillipsburg advances to Wednesday’s sectional semifinals, where it’ll host the winner of the No. 5 Scotch Plains-Fanwood and No. 4 Woodbridge quarterfinal.

The Stateliners aim to claim their 36th sectional crown in the 38 years of the tournament.
