Phillipsburg High School’s wrestling team is one step away from its 21st state championship.
The Stateliners handled South Jersey champion Kingsway 41-21 in the NJSIAA Group 4 semifinals on Sunday afternoon at Toms Rivers North’s Pine Belt Arena.
Phillipsburg (15-1) advances to meet Mendham, a 30-28 winner over Jackson Memorial, in the state final at 7 p.m.
Brian Meyer kicked the match off at 160 pounds with a 16-3 major decision over Colin Wexler and the Stateliners led the rest of the way.
Robert Melise (11 seconds at 220 pounds), Justen Carabello (4:46 at 285), Cody Harrison (3:46 at 126) and Jayson Zinsmeister (3:08 at 152) all provided pins for Phillipsburg.
The Stateliners were able to forfeit 138 and 145 pounds to Kingsway’s powerful pair of brothers, Quinn and Trace Kinner, and still win by 20 points.
Phillipsburg is vying for its fourth consecutive state title.
