Steele came within one win of capturing a state championship in 2016.

A man who helped the Knights reach that point is charged with taking them all the way back to the top.

David Saenz, who served as co-defensive coordinator for the Steele team that lost 38-29 against DeSoto in December’s Class 6A Division II final, was hired as head coach Thursday night by the Schertz-Cibolo-Universal City ISD Board of Trustees. Saenz had been serving as interim head coach since Jan. 18, when SCUCISD promoted Scott Lehnhoff to athletic director.

“You’re not going to find a better person. You’re not going to find someone who cares more about the kids at Steele High School and the surrounding community,” Lehnhoff said. “He’s a pretty great football mind as well.”

Saenz, 37, spent the last 10 seasons as an assistant coach for the Knights, who won their only state title in 2010. They made back-to-back appearances in the state semifinals before reaching the title game last season.

Lehnhoff, who succeeded original Steele head coach Mike Jinks, compiled a 53-7 record in four seasons as head coach. He guided Steele to four undefeated district championships and three consecutive regional titles.
